Short Story: Sunny Side Up, by Lucas Huang

“Dude,” she sighed once again, face in her palm, “Directions are simple, take the eggs from the middle, put the males in the blue basket, and the females in the red one. As easy as that. Not rocket science.” The girl picked up another egg, whispered to it, smiled, then placed it gently into the red basket.
I stared at her from across the table, eyes twitching. I shook my head slightly, ran my fingers through my hair, then looked up at the girl. “How long have you volunteered here? How are you doing this, huh?”
“Ever since Sophomore year…” She reached for another egg and shrugged, palms facing the ceiling, “Just talk to the eggs, I told you. I know people say this is usually a girl’s job... But come on, the egg hunt starts in a couple of hours.”
“Talk to the… Talk to the eggs? You’re sick in mind!” I yelled as I threw my hands in the air, “Prove to me this isn’t a sick joke.”
The girl stared at me, pushed her long hair behind her ear, then picked up an egg from the red basket, “SHE can’t wait for the Easter egg hunt, and would like to be painted light purple with silver stripes... Red dots are fine also.”
I shook my head again, “Unbelievable.” I snatched an egg from the center and stared at it.
“Hey, remember...” the girl said softly, her crimson lips curved upwards, she then pointed to her tranquilizing smile “Sunny side up!”
As I lifted my head to shift my gaze from the egg to her radiant face, my eyes met with hers.
I stared at the girl for some time.
My shoulders dropped, cheeks getting warmer.
A confusing, toasty, boiling feeling lingered inside my chest.
Her tender gaze scrambled up my heart.
She giggled as she tilted her head to one side, her wavy hair brushing gently against her shoulder. My eyes wandered, then I found the egg I was holding, I loosened my grip on it and pressed my lips together tightly.
I sucked in a deep breath, forced a smile upon my face, and held the egg close to my face.
“Hi…” I started.
“I’m a boy… and I dream of becoming a fighter pilot when I grow up!” A voice sounded, barely audible.
I gasped, eyes widened. I lifted the egg up to the ceiling. “It’s a boy!”
The girl and I cracked up all of the sudden.
And so did the eggs.

Poetry: Goodbye, by Lee D

As one journey ends
Another begins
If that wasn’t the case,
Then where would we be?

Stuck, forever, on a dead chunk of life,
Floating across an infinite sea?
But no, when one door closes, another opens

And for all we know
This keeps happening
An endless cycle of start and end
Spring to fall
Friend to friend

And though to say goodbye is sad,
It’s not the first.
It’s not the last.

Magazine Update: Lit Space's Second Anniversary!

Hi there! D.Z. here. I'm the teen founder and one of the current editors of Lit Space. I'm so excited to announce that today is the second anniversary of the creation of this online literary magazine! This started as a curiosity project - Can a few impulsive but creative teenagers really launch a functional litmag? Eventually, I learned that the answer was yes.

Even though there were a few bumps on the road, like a changing team of editors and an unexpected hiatus in 2019, I'm proud to say that Lit Space is running smoothly, and I couldn't have done this without my friends' help and support. Here's a shout-out and big thank you to Vera, my fellow editor and an amazing friend. Without her, the creation of this year's Pride anthology would not have been possible. Her endless support and her dedication have always made being a part of the team behind Lit Space an absolutely wonderful experience. I also want to thank those of my friends who I've asked and encouraged to send in their work when submissions were running low, for helping keep Lit Space going and for putting up with my pestering. And here's another big thank you to everyone who reads Lit Space's publications, to everyone who follows our Instagram, to our awesome audience, without whom Lit Space couldn't truly be considered a platform for young creatives.

I've learned and grown so much while working on this magazine, and I'm really looking forward to seeing where this amazing, colorful, ever-inspiring Lit Space journey will lead in the future! Here's to two years, and many more.

Lots of love,
D.Z.
